Arvind Singh Mewar, a prominent figure in Udaipur and the 76th custodian of the House of Mewar, passed away on March 16, 2025, at the age of 80. He died at his residence, the City Palace in Udaipur, where he had been undergoing treatment in his final years.
Born on December 13, 1944, to Maharana Bhagwat Singh Mewar and Shushila Kumari, Arvind Singh Mewar was a descendant of the legendary Maharana Pratap. He received his primary education at home before attending Mayo College in Ajmer. He later studied at Maharana Bhupal College in Udaipur, earning a BA in English literature, economics, and political science. He furthered his education in hotel management in the UK and USA.
Upon returning to India, Arvind Singh Mewar managed the HRH Group of Hotels, established by his father in 1963. He also curated a notable crystal collection and maintained a fleet of antique cars, both accessible to the public at the City Palace.
His passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from various quarters, reflecting his significant contributions to preserving the heritage and culture of Mewar. The City Palace in Udaipur has become a focal point for mourners, with Vedic chants resonating through its halls as people pay their respects.
Arvind Singh Mewar is survived by his wife, Vijayraj Kumari, whom he married in 1972, and their three children: daughters Bhargavi Kumari and Padmaja Kumari, and son Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar.
His death marks the end of an era for the Mewar dynasty, and his legacy in promoting tourism and preserving the cultural heritage of Udaipur will be remembered for years to come.
