🔴 Political Tensions Escalate as Rahul Gandhi Threatens Assam CM with Jail
In a fiery speech during his recent visit to Assam as part of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of rampant corruption and threatening that he would be sent to jail once Congress returns to power in 2026.
“He thinks he is a king. But when the Congress comes to power, the people will send him to jail. Neither Modi nor Shah will be able to save him,” Rahul Gandhi said, addressing a massive crowd in lower Assam. His remarks have stirred a political storm in the state.
Reacting sharply to the comments, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said,
“The man who is himself out on bail in multiple criminal cases is threatening me with jail? Rahul Gandhi has no guarantee of his own future — forget about giving guarantees to the people of Assam.”
Sarma accused Rahul of spreading lies and indulging in political theatrics to remain relevant.
“He is desperately trying to revive a sinking Congress by throwing baseless allegations. The people of Assam are watching and they know who has delivered real development,” Sarma added.
The war of words comes amid growing political activity ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly Elections, where both the BJP and Congress are expected to engage in intense campaigns. Congress is seeking to regain lost ground in the Northeast, while the BJP is confident in its record of governance under Sarma.
Rahul Gandhi was accompanied by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, who also echoed similar sentiments, stating that Assam was under “dictatorship-like rule.”
Rahul Gandhi is currently out on bail in multiple defamation and financial cases, including the National Herald case.
Himanta Biswa Sarma, a former Congress leader, joined BJP in 2015 and has been instrumental in strengthening the party in the Northeast.
The “jail” remark is being seen as a high-stakes gamble by Congress to polarize voters on corruption and accountability.
🗣️ Reactions from the Ground:
BJP leaders have dismissed the threats as “political comedy.”
Congress workers have hailed Rahul’s bold stance, saying, “The corrupt must be held accountable.”
As political temperatures rise in Assam, the direct face-off between Rahul Gandhi and CM Himanta Biswa Sarma sets the tone for a high-voltage electoral season ahead. With accusations flying and reputations at stake, all eyes are now on the road to 2026.
