“Sittwe Port to be Operational by 2027”: Sarbananda Sonowal Hails PM Modi’s Act East Policy
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal announced that the Sittwe Port in Myanmar is expected to become fully operational by 2027, marking a significant milestone in India’s Act East Policy.
Speaking on the occasion, Sonowal praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary leadership, under which India has consistently worked to boost connectivity and strengthen ties with Southeast Asian countries.
He emphasized that the development of the Sittwe Port will enhance trade, economic integration, and cultural exchange between India’s Northeast and Southeast Asia. The port is a key component of the Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project, which aims to provide an alternative route for transporting goods to the Northeast through the Bay of Bengal, bypassing the narrow Siliguri corridor.
Sonowal stated that once operational, the port will not only reduce travel time and logistics cost but also open new economic corridors for the Northeastern states of India, thereby promoting regional growth and development.
The announcement reflects India’s strategic focus on enhancing infrastructure, regional connectivity, and international cooperation under the larger umbrella of the Act East Policy.
