On March 17, 2025, central Nagpur witnessed significant unrest following a protest by a right-wing group demanding the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb, located in Maharashtra’s Khuldabad. The demonstration escalated when rumors circulated that a holy book of a particular community had been desecrated during the agitation. This led to clashes where stones were hurled at the police, resulting in injuries to six civilians and three police officers.

 

In the aftermath, several shops were vandalized, and multiple vehicles were set ablaze, intensifying the tension in the area. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis addressed the situation, emphasizing that while there is support for actions against Aurangzeb’s grave, any measures must adhere to legal protocols.

 

The controversy surrounding Aurangzeb’s grave has been a focal point in Maharashtra’s political discourse. Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske raised the issue in the Lok Sabha, questioning the preservation of monuments associated with figures perceived as antagonistic to India’s cultural heritage. He specifically advocated for the demolition of Aurangzeb’s grave, citing the Mughal ruler’s historical actions against Hindu temples and leaders.

 

Echoing similar sentiments, BJP leader Navneet Rana criticized Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi for his remarks defending Aurangzeb. Rana called for the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb, reflecting a broader demand among certain political factions.

 

Yoga guru Baba Ramdev also commented on the issue during his visit to Nagpur, labeling Aurangzeb as a cruel ruler and suggesting that preserving his grave symbolizes remnants of past subjugation. He advocated for focusing on India’s rich legacy instead of debating figures like Aurangzeb.

 

The Nagpur violence underscores the deep-seated historical and political tensions in the region, highlighting the challenges authorities face in balancing law enforcement with maintaining communal harmony.
