“Rafale, Sukhoi can also land,” CM Himanta Biswa Sarma announces emergency landing facility in Moran
📍 Moran, Assam | 29 June 2025
In a major development aimed at boosting national security infrastructure and disaster preparedness in the Northeast, Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma today inaugurated a state-of-the-art emergency landing facility for fighter jets at Moran in Dibrugarh district.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Chief Minister proudly declared, “This newly developed emergency landing strip is capable of handling advanced fighter aircraft like Rafale and Sukhoi. It will serve as a strategic asset for the Indian Air Force and enhance our preparedness in both wartime and peacetime emergencies.”
The emergency landing facility has been constructed on a stretch of the national highway near Moran and is designed to allow fighter jets to land in the event of airbase unavailability or during national emergencies. This makes Assam one of the few states in the country to have such infrastructure, especially in a strategically sensitive zone close to international borders.
The project has been implemented in coordination with the Ministry of Defence and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and it reflects the government’s push to integrate civilian infrastructure with defence needs.
CM Sarma emphasized that this initiative is not just a defence measure but also vital for disaster response, as the airstrip can be used to land aircraft carrying relief materials or for evacuation during natural calamities such as floods or earthquakes.
He further stated, “This is part of our commitment to ensure Assam’s readiness in all situations — whether for national defence or civilian emergencies. We are proud to support our armed forces and our people with world-class infrastructure.”
The inauguration was attended by senior officials from the Indian Air Force, NHAI, state ministers, and local leaders. Demonstrations involving landing drills of aircraft are expected to be scheduled in the coming months.
With this move, Assam has taken another step forward in aligning with India’s larger defence modernization and infrastructure integration goals.
