JPC Chairman Jagatambika Pal Chairs Waqf Meeting in Guwahati, Highlights Democratic Engagement
Jagatambika Pal, Chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on Waqf, chaired a crucial meeting in Guwahati on Thursday, emphasizing the inclusive nature of the committee’s deliberations and its commitment to democratic principles.
Addressing the gathering, Pal clarified the purpose and scope of the JPC, stating, “This is not a government committee; it is a parliamentary committee. We are engaging with various stakeholders, including the Minority Commission, social workers, and other representatives, to gather diverse opinions for forming the final report.”
Pal underscored the JPC’s role as a microcosm of Parliament, stating, “In Parliament, JPC is considered a mini parliament. If you are not attending this, then you are essentially not attending Parliament itself.”
Pal also appealed to political parties, including Congress, to actively participate in the proceedings. “Political parties, be it Congress or any other, should stay involved. Opposing the process without engaging in it undermines democratic values,” he said.
The chairman criticized those opposing the committee’s work, questioning their intent. “If anyone is opposing, are they also stopping these stakeholders from expressing their opinions? That goes against the democratic principles we stand for,” he remarked.
