Disappearance turns murder probe

 

Raja (29) and Sonam Raghuvanshi (25) from Indore went missing on May 23, 2025, shortly after checking out of their homestay in Sohra, Meghalaya .

 

Raja’s decomposed body was recovered on June 2 in a gorge beneath Wei Sawdong Falls, with clear signs of foul play .

 

Police unravel contract killing conspiracy

 

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed after the body was found, suspecting a premeditated murder .

 

Investigators allege Sonam hired four hitmen to kill her husband during their honeymoon .

 

Arrests and Sonam’s surrender

 

Three attackers were arrested: Akash Rajput (19, UP), Vishal Chauhan (22, Indore), and Anand Kurmi (23, MP). A fourth suspect, Raj Singh Kushwaha (21), believed to be Sonam’s former employee and alleged lover, was also arrested .

 

Sonam surrendered voluntarily at Nandganj Police Station, Ghazipur, on June 9 .

 

Affair reveals motive

 

SP Vivek Syiem confirmed, “Yes, it appears so (Sonam had a boyfriend)” — linking the murder motive to her alleged romance with Raj Kushwaha .

 

Police assert Sonam and Kushwaha conspired to execute the murder. Kushwaha is regarded as the mastermind directing the hitmen .

 

 

Evidence piling up

 

The motive and planned nature are supported by CCTV footage, call detail records, and eyewitness accounts. A local guide reported seeing them with three men on the day they vanished .

 

Autopsy showed multiple sharp injuries, especially to the head and neck, with a local dao (machete) found at the crime site .

 

6. Family demands CBI probe

 

Sonam’s father, Devi Singh, rejected the charges, alleging foul play by the Meghalaya Police and demanding a CBI inquiry .

 

Meanwhile, Raja’s family calls for capital punishment if Sonam is proven guilty .

Sonam and all four accused are in custody, with Meghalaya Police working to bring Sonam under transit remand for further interrogation .

 

The investigation is expanding via multi-state coordination, and a fifth suspect is reportedly still at large .

 

Police continue to connect digital evidence—calls, CCTV footage—to reconstruct the conspiracy’s planning and execution.
