‘Follow Local Laws’: MEA Urges Indian Nationals Traveling Abroad Amid Reports of Arrests in U.S.
📍 New Delhi, 17 July 2025 —
India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued a strong advisory urging all Indian nationals traveling abroad to strictly adhere to local laws, in the wake of recent reports of arrests of Indian citizens in the United States.
Addressing the media during the weekly briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said:
> “We are aware of certain recent incidents involving the arrest of Indian nationals in the U.S. on legal grounds. We urge all Indians traveling overseas to familiarize themselves with and respect the laws of the host country. Ignorance of the law is not an excuse and may lead to serious consequences.”
While the MEA did not disclose specific case details, sources confirm that several Indians were detained over immigration-related and employment violations in different states of the U.S.
The advisory is particularly aimed at students, professionals, and job seekers traveling under visa categories that have strict compliance requirements.
🛑 Key Points from MEA’s Advisory:
Thoroughly check visa conditions and work limitations
Avoid engaging in any activity that may be seen as a violation of local rules
Reach out to Indian embassies or consulates in case of any legal issues
Do not fall prey to immigration frauds or unverified job offers abroad
The ministry also reiterated that Indian diplomatic missions are available to provide consular assistance, but legal protection under foreign jurisdiction is limited and subject to local processes.
This advisory follows similar alerts issued in the past regarding international student scams, fake job rackets, and visa overstays.
The MEA has called for heightened awareness and caution, especially as outbound travel from India continues to grow post-pandemic.
