Delhi-bound American Airlines flight from New York diverted to Rome after security concern

Telegram

An American Airlines flight from New York to New Delhi was diverted to Rome on Sunday, February 23, 2025, due to a potential security concern that was later determined to be non-credible. Flight 292, carrying 199 passengers and 15 crew members, departed from John F. Kennedy International Airport and was over the Caspian Sea near Turkmenistan when the crew received a bomb threat via email. As a precaution, the aircraft made a U-turn and was escorted by Italian military jets to Leonardo da Vinci International Airport in Rome, landing safely around 5:30 p.m. local time.

Upon arrival, law enforcement conducted a thorough inspection of the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and found no credible threat. Passengers underwent additional security screenings and were accommodated overnight in Rome to allow for necessary crew rest. The flight was scheduled to continue to New Delhi the following day. American Airlines emphasized that safety and security are their top priorities and apologized for the inconvenience caused to passengers.

This incident follows a recent event where an Air India flight from Mumbai to New York was diverted to New Delhi due to a security concern.
