131 Illegal Encroachers Detained in Sikhnajhar National Park
Kokrajhar: In a major crackdown on illegal encroachment and deforestation, the Ultapani forest range, in collaboration with Kokrajhar police, detained 131 individuals involved in unlawful activities in Sikhnajhar National Park. The detained individuals hail from various districts, including Chirang, Bongaigaon, Sonitpur, Udalguri, and Guwahati.
The operation targeted ride numbers 6, 7, and 8 within the park, areas severely affected by deforestation and environmental degradation caused by illegal encroachments. Reports indicate that over the past week, more than 500 people from different districts have been actively engaged in deforestation, leading to significant ecological harm.
Forest officials have raised concerns about the increasing threats to the biodiversity of Sikhnajhar National Park due to these illegal activities. The park, known for its rich flora and fauna, has been under growing pressure from human interventions.
Authorities have vowed to take strict action to curb such activities and ensure the preservation of the park. The detained individuals are currently under investigation, and further operations are expected to address the broader network behind the encroachments.
This operation underscores the urgent need for stronger measures to protect Assam’s protected forest areas from illegal exploitation and environmental damage.
